Counselling in person for young people 17-18 & adults in Chester, Cheshire.
Online and by phone, UK & Overseas
“A space to be yourself, be heard, and explore what matters to you.”
Hello, I’m Helen, and welcome.
I’m a counsellor who is passionate about supporting people through life’s challenges, big or small. I offer in-person sessions in Chester, Cheshire, as well as online or by phone, so we can work together wherever you are.
My approach is friendly, informal, and entirely led by you. You decide what to share and when. Therapy with me is a collaborative process; you lead the way, and I offer presence, curiosity, and care. I provide a warm, safe space where we can explore what matters to you, at your pace and in your way.
I’m trauma-informed, which means I’m especially mindful of creating safety, supporting regulation, and working gently with the body and mind, so you feel contained and understood. If it feels helpful, I also offer breathing retraining. This helps you discover calmer, more natural ways of breathing, which can ease anxiety or panic and bring moments of relaxation and calm.
I bring both professional training and life experience to my work. I know what it’s like to feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of your next step. These experiences have shaped who I am and deepened my understanding of what it means to struggle and to find a way through.
Karuna, the name of my practice, means compassion or empathy. It reflects my belief in kindness, understanding, and the power of connection during difficult times.
Counselling isn’t just a job for me; I want to help people live a life that feels meaningful to them. If you’re ready to take that next step, I’d be honoured to walk alongside you.
Life can be challenging in many ways through grief, loss, work-related stress, relationship or family difficulties, trauma, or changes in identity and self-esteem. These experiences can affect how you feel, how you relate to others, and how you see yourself. You might feel overwhelmed, low, or unsure of how to move forward. If you're feeling this way, you're not alone. Counselling can offer you a calm, supportive space to make sense of what’s going on and to find your way at your own pace.
Who I work with
You might be navigating a painful bereavement, the death of a partner, a family member, a friend, or the often-unspoken grief that comes with losing a beloved animal companion. This is an area of deep personal and professional interest for me, and I offer space for you to grieve in your own way, without pressure or judgement.
You may be carrying the unique and complex emotions that come with losing someone to suicide, such as questions, guilt, sadness, and deep confusion that can feel hard to speak about elsewhere.
Perhaps you’re feeling overwhelmed with stress, anxiety, burnout, or emotional overload — and need space to simply stop, breathe, and begin to understand what’s going on inside.
You might be struggling with patterns of guilt, shame, or self-doubt, or have a sense of being stuck, unable to move forward.
Some clients come to explore their identity, particularly after big transitions such as moving abroad, returning ‘home’, or navigating changes in their sense of self.
Others are going through major life shifts: changes in health, menopause, caring for others, or re-evaluating what matters to them.
Whatever you're facing, we can explore it together — gently and at your pace.
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
Starting counselling can feel overwhelming, especially when you're faced with countless profiles, qualifications, and approaches. You might be wondering:
Who will really get me? Who will I feel safe with? Who can I trust to walk alongside me when things feel hard?
While training and experience matter, research consistently shows that it’s the relationship between client and counsellor that makes the biggest difference. You need to feel safe, understood, and genuinely cared for.
I’m a warm, grounded, experienced professional counsellor who brings both clinical training and real-life experience to my work. I’ve known joy and I’ve known struggle in childhood and adulthood. I know how deeply healing it can be to have a space where you’re truly seen and heard.
In our sessions, we’ll gently explore what’s going on for you, untangling thoughts, feelings, and patterns. You’ll have space to reflect, to breathe, and to see things more clearly. Together, we’ll work at your pace, building trust and insight as we go. You don’t have to face things alone. And you don’t have to have it all figured out before we begin.
“
I offer person-centred, compassion-focused support to individuals navigating grief and loss, whether through the death of a loved one, loss by suicide, or the passing of a beloved pet. I also work with those facing emotional challenges, such as the lasting impact of difficult life experiences, domestic abuse, anxiety, stress, negative thoughts, low self-esteem, and self-doubt. My approach creates a safe and supportive space for people dealing with relationship struggles, workplace pressure, identity questions, or a deeper search for meaning and purpose.
I am especially passionate about providing sensitive support for those grieving the loss of a companion animal. This area of bereavement was the focus of my Master's research. This has given me an in-depth understanding of this unique form of loss. In addition to this, I adore animals and have always had them as part of my life and family. I know that many pet owners feel alone in their grief and that they deserve a dedicated space should they need it. Our animals are our family and are loved. Grief comes from love, and if you need support in processing your loss, please reach out.
