10 Things to Know About Your First Counselling Session

🌿
What You Might Be Worried About – and What It’s Actually Like
Starting counselling can feel like a big step. If you’re thinking about having your first session, it’s completely normal to feel unsure, nervous, or even a bit overwhelmed. This post is here to gently walk you through what to expect and help ease any worries you might have.

1. It’s Okay to Feel Nervous
Many people feel anxious before their first session — you're not alone. It's new, it’s unknown, and you’re sharing parts of yourself that might feel tender. Your counsellor understands this and will take things at your pace.

2. You Don’t Have to ‘Have It All Together’
There’s no need to prepare a speech or explain everything perfectly. You don’t need to be sure of what you want to say. Just showing up is enough. Your counsellor is there to help you explore things, not to judge or expect answers.

3. It’s a Safe, Confidential Space
What you say in counselling stays between you and your counsellor (with a few legal exceptions, which will be explained). The aim is to create a space where you can be honest without fear of judgement.

4. It’s More Conversation Than Interrogation
Many people fear it will feel like being put on the spot, but a first session often feels more like a gentle chat — a chance for you and your counsellor to get to know each other.

5. You’re in Control
You don’t have to talk about anything you're not ready to. You decide what you share. It’s completely fine to say “I don’t want to go there today” or “I don’t know how to start.”

6. It Might Feel Emotional – And That’s Okay
Talking about personal things can bring up feelings. Tears, silence, or even laughter are all welcome. There’s no ‘right’ way to be in a session.

7. You’ll Learn About How Counselling Works
Your counsellor will usually explain a bit about how they work and ask a few questions to understand what’s brought you to therapy. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions too.

8. It Might Take Time to Feel Comfortable
Just like any new relationship, it might take a few sessions to feel fully at ease. That’s completely normal. Counselling is a process, not a quick fix.

9. You Don’t Have to Commit Straight Away
The first session is often just to see how it feels to work together. There’s no pressure to book more sessions if it doesn’t feel right — although many people do continue once they’ve taken that first step.

10. You’re Not Broken – You’re Human
Counselling isn’t about “fixing” you. It’s about supporting you through life’s difficulties and helping you reconnect with your own strength, wisdom, and sense of self.

Final Thoughts
Starting therapy takes courage — and just considering it is a brave step. If you’re feeling unsure, that’s okay. A good counsellor will meet you with kindness, patience, and compassion.

If you’re ready, your first session could be the beginning of something really meaningful.
