What Does Good Trauma-Informed Support Look Like – five key points

If you’ve experienced trauma, you’ll know how much it can shape daily life — from how you feel about yourself, to your relationships, to the way you cope with stress. Finding the right support can feel overwhelming, but trauma-informed counselling can make a real difference.
As a person-centred counsellor, I believe that you already carry the ability to heal and grow. My role is to create a safe, supportive space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace.

So, what does good trauma-informed support actually look like?

1. Safety and Trust

The foundation of healing is feeling safe. Trauma-informed counselling provides a confidential, non-judgemental space where you can talk openly and know you will be heard. Trust takes time — and that’s okay.

2. Choice and Control

Trauma often leaves people feeling powerless. In counselling, you are always in charge. You decide what to share, when to share it, and how far to go. Sessions move at your pace — never mine.

3. Empathy and Understanding

In a person-centred approach, empathy is key. I listen deeply, without judgement, and accept you exactly as you are. You are the expert in your own life — I’m here to walk alongside you.

4. Making Sense of Triggers

Many people find themselves reacting in ways they don’t fully understand. Together, we can explore those triggers and begin to find gentler, more compassionate ways of responding.

5. Building on Strengths

Surviving trauma takes incredible strength. Counselling isn’t just about pain — it’s also about recognising the resilience that has carried you this far and learning how to nurture it going forward.

Moving Forward at Your Own Pace

Good trauma-informed support isn’t about rushing through painful memories or forcing change. It’s about creating a safe, trusting relationship where you can reflect, heal, and grow in your own time.
